Question: What do common office and business acronyms and terms mean in plain language?
Why keep a plain-language business glossary
Office and business conversations are full of shorthand. Acronyms like KPI, ROI, and SLA are convenient, but they can confuse new team members, partners, and clients. A simple glossary gives everyone a shared starting point and makes meetings, emails, and decision-making clearer.
Common financial and performance terms
KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator. It is a measure used to track how well a person, team, or organization is doing against a goal. ROI stands for Return on Investment. It is a way of thinking about the value gained from a decision or project relative to the resources put in. Burn rate is a term that describes how quickly a company is spending its available cash. Margin refers to the share of revenue that remains after some costs are subtracted; the exact type of margin usually depends on which costs are included.
Common relationship and agreement terms
B2B stands for business-to-business and describes companies that sell products or services to other organizations. B2C stands for business-to-consumer and describes companies that sell directly to individuals. An MOU, or Memorandum of Understanding, is a written outline of a general agreement before the parties sign a more detailed contract. An SLA, or Service Level Agreement, is a document that defines the level of service a provider commits to give, such as response time or availability. An NDA, or Non-Disclosure Agreement, is a confidentiality agreement that helps protect private information.
Common project and office terms
Deliverable: a product, report, or result that is produced at the end of a piece of work. Milestone: a meaningful checkpoint in a project. Stakeholder: anyone who is affected by or has an interest in a project or business decision. Action item: a specific task assigned to a person or team to complete.
How to use this glossary at work
Start by choosing the terms your team uses most often. Write definitions in your own words and add a short example from a real project. Keep the glossary in a shared document or wiki so everyone can access it. Update the list as language changes, and try to avoid jargon when a simple word will do.
